Kahlil Gibran on Love

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
and  then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Mind Moves

By Joe Harte The Taiji classics say the mind leads and the energy and body follow. But as my teacher Patrick Kelly asks “how many actually consciously train that way?” For the most part people move the body in some unconscious instinctive way and then bring their awareness into an often static held posture. How to break that cycle of move and listen, move and then become aware, is at the core of our training and transforms external movements, however slow, smooth, and beautiful into true Taiji. To begin the training to move the mind takes guidance and constant reminders so as not to forget to make the effort. The attempt should be to move the mind and use intention to lead every movement within the form, and then slowly bring that into the much more difficult scenario of partner work and the fixed pattern pushing hands. Master Huang (Huang Sheng-Shyan) said there are no secrets in Taiji just things too small to be seen. Patrick Kelly, Master Huang Xingxian’s long time inner school student, says that if there is a secret it’s knowing where to put the mind and at what time. This moving of the mind training begins with awareness which in itself has an intention buried within it. That is to say by its very nature moving the awareness through the body has an implied intention. Patrick Kelly teaches a training method that begins the first timing of the mind with the movement of the body itself. We contract muscles to lift the body, and then release muscles to let it fall. In the rising wave of contraction/ lifting the mind is trained to move with the rising movement. Then within the releasing of muscles and body falling the mind moves down. The timing of the mind relative to the activation/ de-activation of the body is usually introduced to new starters by asking them to press their feet into the ground to begin the lifting process then let the minds awareness follow that movement up. This is really just to introduce the idea and is in fact the opposite of what the classics state because in this instance the body is active and the mind passive i.e. the body has been activated (by some means) and then the mind follows. Some period of practise is necessary to allow people to get used to the idea of consciously moving the mind. Once that stage is reasonable and comfortable it becomes possible to begin to draw the mind up and down more or less simultaneously with the body movement whist at the same time becoming aware of the first two muscle state changes – muscle contract and muscle release. After some time and effort this then leads naturally and gradually towards moving the mind a little ahead of the body movement to include the joint sensors. At this stage the practise is now tending towards the ideal of what is asked in the classics – that the mind leads. And now we can say the mind is active and the body passive. Once that process has begun, beyond those initial timings exist a whole range of timings taking the mind slowly further and further ahead as the awareness deepens and is able to listen to more and more subtle and levels. As Patrick says it is only really possible to generate an intention from the level at which you are able to listen…….. and so slowly the deep mind awakens. Patrick and his students teach in Zurich, and recently he opened a state of the art facility in Shanghai which visitors are welcome to http://www.9clouds.ch For classes and Seminars in the UK Joe Harte teaches regular classes in Durham with Seminars in Durham and London and elsewhere by request www.communigate.co.uk/ne/taijiquan

Taiji Seminars Durham & London

Deeply refined teachings using 5 inner senses, in the footsteps of Mst Huang Xingxian & Patrick A Kelly.

Sat 10th Aug  - LONDON  (9.45) 10am-5pm £50

Joe Harte is a Senior Instructor under Patrick Kelly with
35 yrs martial arts experience, 20 years intensive Taiji.

The Hub, Woodberry Grove, London N4 1SN
(5mins walk from Manor House underground station)
Bring lunch, use of kitchen, outdoor training if fine.

Suitable for: Those who have some Taiji experience. This seminar will cover the deeper aspects of Taiji training beyond just outer movement. Working through the smooth, accurate, released & aligned body we begin the process of awakening the ‘Deep Mind’. Concentration on the 5 inner senses, allows review of current habitual patterns and Taiji then becomes a continuous catalyst for deep inner change and refinement – leading to gentleness with inner strength and profound peace of mind.

5 Loosening Exercises: of Huang Xingxian are a deeply refined training in themselves. Smoothly co-ordinating the body, we then learn how to begin moving the mind ahead of the movement. Understanding how releasing habitually held muscle states whilst exploring the detailed alignment of the joints within the 5 stage vertical circle gives rise the elusive Taiji jing.

Taiji Short & Long Form
Within the outer sequence we explore the continuously changing 5 natural muscle phases, giving rise to spring like forces that arise within the ebb and flow of movement. This deeply concentrated method builds to enhance Mind intention (Yi), Energy flow (Chi), and awareness (Ding Jing). Through the sequence of muscle state changes, as the body settles the earliest connections begin to form and forces rise. Stretch and pressure build through the body like a gently inflating balloon or the ‘bending of the Bow’.

Set Pattern Pushing hands: Each of these precise partner exercises are designed to explore our responses to sensitively applied incoming forces. In this way we can learn to remain undisturbed with the mind deep whilst softly yielding and neutralising. In bringing the deep mind states from the Loosening exercises and Forms into the partner work one may equate this with learning to deal calmly with situations in outer life.

The applications or returning of a partners force within each of the set patterns calls for a high degree of co-ordination and timing. This is the refined martial aspect of the Taiji - Just as the Zen Master Archers ‘allow’ the shot to release itself seemingly doing nothing, so in Taiji we allow the returning of the partners force through a wave of un-stretching muscles and they are thrown.

8 Paths Energy Transformation: Ancient Daoist meditations circulate the harmonised energy using intention and awareness through the 8 special channels.

April 27th World Taiji Day?!

I’m told April 27th is world Taiji Day.
How strange to me that it is just one day!

I think you’ll find those who make the effort to find their inner world through Taiji are influencing their outer world, not just on one day of the year, but every day and every moment of their lives…
